Probably the worse time to be a staffer. Can’t imagine what it must be like for the recent college graduates answering the phones in Senator Menendez’s office.
Stories breaking in multiple outlets. The Miami Herald has the lead story:
FBI agents late Tuesday night raided the West Palm Beach business of an eye doctor suspected of providing free trips and even underage Dominican Republic prostitutes to U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J. — who has denied what he calls the “fallacious allegations.”
When you’re an elected official, there’s just certain words you don’t want running in the same sentence as your own name. Words like “underage” and “prostitute” for instance.
Of course, these times of strife can also cause staff to rise to the occasion, working diligently to protect the Boss from bad press.
Back in 2007, Senator Larry Craig faced his own sex scandal when Roll Call reported that a Minneapolis airport plain clothes officer “investigating lewd conduct complaints in a men’s public restroom” arrested the Senator. The restroom was apparently a well-known cruising spot for gay men.
His staff tripped over themselves trying to beat back the press:
A spokesman for Craig described the incident as a “he said/he said misunderstanding.”
